PIPE HIRE

Clearly there is a lot of interest in piping of all kinds, but the cost of buying a new set can be daunting, particularly with the Border sets and cornemuses which can cost well in excess of £1000; £1500-£2000 is not uncommon, and while the enthusiasm of beginners is to be commended it would seem to be prudent to have an idea of the capabilities of the instrument (and one's own abilities) before contemplating such an outlay. With this in mind I propose to have in readiness several sets for hire: at present a combination set in A / D of SSP, a Border set in A and a 2-drone cornemuse in G are available. Issues of hygeine may not concern us because these are bellows-blown sets. The scheme will go ahead if there is sufficient interest. Read through the details below, then contact me if interested here, or telephone 01388 762620. It should be possible to supply all the usual smallpipe pitches, A, C, D for example.

Pipe sets, typically in boxwood, can be hired at the rate of £200 per 6 month period + an additional charge of £15 for the chanter reed which is a wearing item. Drone reeds must be returned at the end of the hire period. A £50 deposit is required which is returnable (subject to pipes being returned in an undamaged and unaltered state) at the end of the hire period. Any repairs deemed necessary (I am prepared to overlook loose ferrules and things of that nature) on return of the instrument will be deducted from the deposit.

Minimum hire period is 2 months (£66). The rate is not excessive as bassoon hire costs approx. £42 per month. Also the hire includes the bellows.

There will be a small insurance charge to pay (by the hirer) which will cover for loss or theft in the UK.

You can transfer deposit and rental charges to a new instrument. For example, you hire a 'D' set but decide you would prefer an 'A' set. Deposit and payments are transferred to 'A' set purchase.

It is hoped to have Border pipes and cornemuses for hire soon.
